Tankless Water Heaters
Tankless
water heaters are quite popular these days. Almost always
they require that the existing steel gas line be upsized to
accommodate the often times 4 fold gas demand increase. This
is rarely done by plumbing firms, because homeowners don't
know the requirements and most plumbing firms who install
these do not obtain the required city building permit so an
inspector with the city who has no financial interest in
shortcuts independently scrutinizes the installation
procedure. Undersizing a gas line is negligent and can at
best cause poor water heater performance or worse cause
damage to your new tankless water heater since manufactures
normally do not cover damage from negligent, illegal
installations.
There are some potential advantages, such as a tankless
water heater has neither a storage tank to keep heated all
day, nor a pilot light, it burns natural gas only when you
need hot water. This eliminates much standby heat loss,
which depending on the weather can be as high as 3-4% every
hour for storage tank type water heaters. This higher
efficiency can allow you to save money off your utility
costs.
There are some drawbacks to tankless water heaters such as
the gas line size issue. After an inspection and evaluation,
our plumbing professionals will discuss these during your
consultation so that you can make an informed decision. If
you decide you want the endless supply of hot water heater
in a very compact, space saving long life heater, we know
exactly how to competently and safely accomplish such with
quality models by Bradford White and Takagi.
